The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (commonly known as the WIC program) serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children younger than 5 who are at nutritional risk. As the third largest food and nutrition assistance program, WIC served about 6.2 million participants per month in fiscal year 2020, including almost half of all infants born in the United States. Federal program costs for WIC totaled $4.9 billion in fiscal year 2020.

This dataset provides monthly statistics for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation in Virginia by month and by Local Department of Social Services (LDSS) for the period 2012-2021.

For the eleventh consecutive year, Feeding America conducted our annual Map the Meal Gap study to improve our understanding of food insecurity and food costs at the local level. The most recent release is based on data from 2019. In response to COVID-19, we also released a companion study and interactive map that illustrate the projected impact of the pandemic on local food insecurity in 2020 and 2021. To better assess the current and future state of local food insecurity, it is critical to understand historical variations prior to the pandemic. Only then can we develop effective strategies to reach people at risk of hunger.

This data is presented alongside corresponding population data for each racial or ethnic group from the Census Bureau’s 2018 ACS 5-Year estimates. Note that we have used standard Census categories for race and ethnicity throughout this dashboard, but many states are currently reporting their data using non-standard categories.
