This dataset includes the number and rate of emergency department (ED) visits for firearm injury (FAI) in Virginia by year and by the city/county of the patient. City/county localities are assigned using the patient's residential zip code for Virginia residents. Patients with non-Virginia or unknown zip codes are grouped as 'Out of State.' FAI visit counts are combined for some cities and counties due to zip codes spanning multiple localities. Data set includes FAI visits from 2015 through the most recent complete year.
Each row represents the number and rate emergency department visits for firearm injury that occurred in Virginia by year and by patient geography. Firearm injury visits are identified using key terms in the chief complaint (reason for visit) and discharge diagnosis codes. Key terms include: gun with wound, GSW, gunshot, buckshot, revolver, rifle, shotgun, firearm, pistol, handgun, been shot, I was shot, I got shot, combination of hit, ricochet, graze with bullet. Preferred Office-Based Opioid Treatment Programs, also called Preferred OBOTs, are a type of outpatient addiction treatment designed for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). Preferred OBOTs provide high quality Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), for treating people with OUD. This dataset includes Medicaid enrolled Preferred OBOTs along with their contact information.
For more information, see the Virginia Medicaid Enterprise System (MES) site regarding preferred office-based treatment programs: https://vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov/manual-chapters/preferred-office-based-addiction-treatment-and-opioid-treatment-programs or the DMAS OTS Manual https://www.dmas.virginia.gov/media/3765/ots-manual.pdf.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This provisional data is being provided as we continue to migrate data between vendors. The data on this page will continue to change throughout the data migration process and will stabilize at the completion of the data migration and data quality process. Thank you for your patience.
Dataset manually derived from Private View - EMS Biospatial - Substance Use Incidents dataset.
This dataset contains Emergency Medical Services (EMS) information for reported incidents that involve a substance or have suspected substance involvement. Data in this dataset has been provided by the Biospatial system on behalf of the Office of EMS.
Please be advised that the accuracy of the data within the EMS patient care reporting system is limited by system performance and the accuracy of data submissions received from EMS agencies. Of note, this dataset includes records reporting all patient dispositions (e.g., treated and transported, treated and transferred care, assist). As such, unique patients may be counted more than once in the dataset (e.g., if a patient was treated by two EMS agencies, that patient may be counted in the dataset twice). This data should not be interpreted as the number of unique substance use incidents reported by Virginia EMS agencies.
This dataset has been classified as a Tier 0 asset by the Commonwealth Data Trust. Tier 0 classifies a data resource as information that is neither sensitive nor proprietary, and intended for public access.

Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) are programs certified by the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that engage in supervised assessment and treatment, using methadone, buprenorphine, L-alpha acetyl methadol, or naltrexone, of members who are addicted to opioids. Opioid Treatment Services (OTS) includes the use of Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) in addition to the psychotherapy services to treat a member with an OUD.
OTP providers must be licensed by DBHDS as a provider of Medication Assisted Opioid Treatment/Opioid Treatment Services and contracted by the Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) and the DMAS fee-for-service Contractor as an Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS) OTP Provider.
For treatments, take home doses have a maximum 28-day limit dispensing at a time and must be approved by the State Opioid Treatment Authorities (SOTA).
For more information, see the Virginia Medicaid Enterprise System (MES) site regarding take-home treatment programs: https://vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov/global-search?keys=Take-home or the DMAS OTS Manual https://www.dmas.virginia.gov/media/3765/ots-manual.pdf.
