Virginia Department of Transportation

The Commonwealth’s Transportation Agency

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's roads, bridges and tunnels. And, through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it provides funding for airports, seaports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third-largest state-maintained highway system in the country, behind Texas and North more.

Virginia Roads

Virginia Roads offers access to VDOT Open Data, stories relating to VDOT initiatives, as well as web map and apps powered by Open Data that can be used to answer questions and solve problems. Virginia Roads was developed as part of an effort to provide user friendly access for exploring and downloading VDOT's open data. VDOT is committed to providing the traveling public, lawmakers and partners with easy to understand information that demonstrates how we are managing the state’s transportation infrastructure and to ensure VDOT’s transparency to the public.

Smarter Roads

SmarterRoads provides raw and processed VDOT transportation data available to approved users. A variety of data is available including information on road conditions, incidents, work zones, and multi-modal transportation and asset information like road signs. Signal data is also accessible to support the connected and automated vehicle industry, third-party enterprises and the public. Data sets range from real-time and near real-time sensor streams, to annual data files.
